All mascaras are not created equal. When putting anything on the eyelash extensions, your #1 priority needs to be on that it’s oil-free and it can be easily washable without making the lashes fall out. If you were to apply a waterproof mascara you will need an oil-based makeup remover to completely clean off your eyelash extensions.

Remember oil and glue don’t mix. With non-waterproof mascaras, it can still be a little tricky. If they aren’t waterproof, then they are either oil-based or water-based. Often companies prefer to make oil-based mascara because it holds onto the curl longer and won’t smudge as easily as the water-based. In this case, oil can only be removed by more oil. You might be tempted to just keep using your favourite brand without even looking to figure out which formula it is. I would be fine with that if you would use the oil-based makeup remover to completely clean your lashes and get a fill once a week to replace all the extensions that fell out. At least that way your lashes would be clean and bacteria free. Yet, I know most of you won’t be doing that. I mean, in a perfect world, I would ask you to not use any mascara at all. Though I know special occasions happen and some of you just like the way it completes your makeup routine so I’m not even going to ask. I, as most technicians (I assume), would agree to a compromise. Water-based mascaras are not impossible to find and there are drugstore and high-end brands that carry them.
3. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara $4
This mascara is one of the classics. Not only has it been around for 40 years, it is great for your eyelashes! As you apply, it creates a natural fullness and has a conditioning formula that will help strengthen your natural lashes. My favourite thing about this mascara is that it comes in a clear formula!
2. Benefit Bad Gal Lash Mascara $19
The way this lash wand was created was to give you thick dramatic lashes. Because of the false lash effect, it can have, it would be best to use this mascara closer to your fill appointment, so you can give the few natural lashes that have lost the extensions the push they need to fill in the blanks.
1. Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara $18
By lightly coating the extensions and lengthening your lashes this is a great choice. It will leave your lashes with a slightly glossy look which is nice for those who want their eyes to pop a little bit more. It is completely oil free and paraben free.
If you don’t want to spend time browsing through stores or websites looking to see if your favourite brand has a water-based formula, the salon or spa that you get your extensions from might also sell a water-based mascara. Next time you’re in to get your fill or full set, feel free to ask them if they do or what their favourite ones are. You can also talk to your technician about going longer or thicker so your extensions can match what you’re looking for without the mascara.
